Another Humoctopus Update!

The humoctopus lives on in our hearts, and on a lot of our name badges.

It has become more or less EvCC’s IT Dept. mascot, and I am STILL giving away buttons to people. It’s really awesome. Everyone from student employees to administrators, faculty to maintainance are sporting them. Only a few people know for certain that they came from me; most assume they came from IT, even from within IT. I will occasionally get emails saying, “I hear you can hook me up with a humoctopus button. How soon can you get me one?” or “A little bird told me to ask you about humoctopi.”

The best part, though, is that the creator of the humoctopus, FooFus, posted this in the comment section of the original humoctopus post! There was much squeeing and fangirliness on my part, on account of his being a DefCon panelist… and entertainingly enough, our site went down for about three days immediately following his post. Coincidence? Perhaps.

At any rate, the Humoctopus is something of a celebrity on our campus now, and the IT department was asking my friend (who they suspect is responsible for the whole mess) if they could get in contact with FooFus and see if it would be within legal bounds to get a Humoctopus on a mug made. Of course he gave it his blessing – “We can probably work something out, if it’s basically an in-joke for IT folks. We’re pretty much all about that sort of thing,” – and sent us another piece of wonderful artwork.

So there you have it. I can’t tell you how happy this all makes me. It’s the first fun thing that I’ve seen permeate the campus in a long time, what with all the budget cuts and hiring freezes and economic downturns going on. What we wanted was a campus hero – but what we needed was a humoctopus.
